Rowling wrote her first Harry Potter novel, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, the Gloucestershire born English novelist could hardly have imagined how much worldwide attention her novel, and ensuing series of books, would attract. In June 2008, sales of the books passed the 400 million milestone.

The Harry Potter books have also been turned into blockbuster films with seven screened so far, the eighth and final movie, Deathly Hallows: Part Two, is due to be released in July this year. As of January 30, 2011 – the Harry Potter film franchise has grossed $6.3 billion dollars worldwide and still climbing (source Wiki answers).

Joanne Rowling’s fantasy novels are about adolescent wizard Harry Potter who is a student at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Along with best friends Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger, the three students have to overcome the powers of evil wizard Lord Voldemort, whose goal is to rule the magical world of wizards.

Here’s my list of some of the best Harry Potter quotes and sayings from the adolescent wizard himself, and other characters from the collection of Harry Potter books and movies.

  1. I love the second to last quote (by Sirius). That is one of the truest measures of a man.

    **Michael.JACKSON**

  2. I love the one in the seventh one by Luna “I’ve never been to this part of the castle before!…atlases when I’m awake….I sleep-walk you know? That’s why I wear shoes to bed.

    • Ah you stupid American, it’s “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” the Sorcerer’s Stone is what they changed it to, along with our spellings like colour=color, recognise=recognize. That’s the British title, the original.

        • Americans “copied” it? Oh silly muggle.

Potter is everyones thing. If you read Anne Rice, she’s from the US so I guess “vampires” are OUR thing.

shake my head at the stupidity.

          • Who the hell is Anne Rice? At least everybody knows who JK Rowling is……. stupid americans!!

          • Anne Rice is the author of “Interview with a Vampire!” A very well-known author…..well, well-known to those of us who are literate.

          • I agree that “copying” it is a silly concept, but you, my dear fellow muggle, shouldn’t lay claim to vampires on account of Anne Rice, Bram Stoker was there a bit earlier after all ;)
And literacy is a wonderful thing, you’ve got a pretty massive choice available.
            Don’t hate :P

          • right. Lemme just make this clear – Harry Potter will ALWAYS remain a british thing, not everyones thing. especially NOT AN AMERICAN THING!!!!!!

        • Um.. You do realize that JK Rowling personally insisted the Potter series be published in America? She said so in an interview conducted by Mugglenet.com. You know, the biggest Harry Potter fansite in the world, the one that is COINCIDENTALLY based in…wait for it…AMERICA!
          *gasp* Shocker, I know.

Also, even if, for the sake of argument, we do agree that HP is a ‘Brit’ thing, then shouldn’t you be mighty ashamed of yourselves for being such bad fans? I mean, think about it. If you look up wizard rock, the first credited band is Harry and the Potters. Their origin? Massachusetts. Next biggest band? Draco and the Malfoys. Their origin? Rhode Island. Mugglenet’s founder, Emerson Spartz, is American. The next biggest fan site is the Leaky Cauldron. Also American(New York, to be exact). The world renowned Harry Potter Alliance was founded and is still based in…want to guess it? Yup, Massachusetts, America. Starkid Potter, creators of A Very Potter Musical and A Very Potter Sequel(and if you don’t know those, you are not an actual Harry Potter fan), is based in Illinois.

What was that? Oh, it’s everyone’s thing now, is it? Yeah. That’s what I thought.

          • The only thing I disagree with in your statement is that if you don’t know AVPM/AVPS then you’re not a Harry Potter fan. That’s just riddikulus. AVPM is nothing more than a funny mediocre HP related musical. It means nothing if you haven’t taken the time to watch it because I partly wish I hadn’t.

      • I think you guys are over-reacting, I mean it was J.K Rowling that wrote the American version, we didn’t copy it. And Simon Cowell brought the X-Factor over to America, we didn’t copy it. And the only reason they did all of this was to make more money, it’s not really a big deal, so just chill. We didn’t “copy” anything, it was brought to us.

        • Even if the whole Potter series was in Britain before America you should be happy somebody took a chance and published the first book (not saying the U.S. or U.K. title at risk of being insulted, as that is what is going on). Now we know that they are amazing books, and you are probably asking “no one in their right mind would second-guess Potter!” but when publishing a book it is always a risk. Be happy Harry Potter novels -all around the world- have been available to us.

  3. When J.K. Rowling wrote her first Harry Potter novel, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, the Gloucestershire born English novelist could hardly of imagined
    ————–

Above, I quoted your opening sentence.

“Hardly of imagined”? You do know it’s “have” and not “of”, right? If you want people to take you and your website seriously, I’d strongly advise you not to adopt the grammar of an uneducated six year old. Sorry for sounding so rude (and I’m sure I do), but that really is such a glaring grammatical faux pas. Any time I see phraseology like that online, it’s usually just chit-chat between people so I ignore it and suffer in silence. However, this is a website, not an e-mail or a chat room or a social networking site. So this time, I thought I’d try a little nudge in the right direction. If only ONE person stops using this truly frightening grammar, it’ll be worth it.

    Apart from that, nice page.

    • P.S. This all comes about from contractions like should’ve and would’ve and – possibly (to fit in with the opening sentence) hardly’ve. Phonetically they sound like “should of” and “would of” and “hardly of” but surely the educational system is teaching kids basic grammar… but – shockingly – I hear adults use the same sloppy language on a regular basis.

If it’s their choice to sound like uneducated chavs, that’s their choice. Painful to hear but I don’t comment. But at the very least the written word should be subject to a slightly better scruitiny, don’t you think?

Sorry for the rant but the English language has produced such wonderful works throughout history – yes, even the Harry Potter novels – and it saddens me to see it so callously pushed aside like this.

This isn’t a personal attack – if it looks like that I do apologise. This is a criticism of this sort of shoddy grammar used on a website which, in its own way, is a published work, displayed for the public to read rather than careless chatter in the street and a personal peeve of mine.

Feel free to remove this message if you think it’s hurting your site. I won’t be offended. But please, correct your grammar first. :)

    • Is it really worth posting an anonymous comment ranting about a small grammatical error? My 6 year old, educated sister didn’t know that, even though I did, and I am 16. You have worse things to fear than that; it is truly sad that you could get so uptight and stressed about something so tiny and insignificant. If you expect JK Rowling’s fan’s, such as us, to suddenly decide that her stories didn’t create the atmospheric magical tension and suspense, which you seem to believe is darkened by the terrifying shadow of mistaking a phrase/sentence, then you are mad. I have spotted a few grammatical errors in your long rant (the P.S. one), which frankly I find hypocritical. A few missing commas and the occasional mention of how people use sloppy language, but what about when you said Sorry for the rant? (Sorry, my speech marks don’t work!) Is that sloppy? Should you not have said I am sorry… etc? I am sorry if this sounds rude, but so does yours.

    • woah you ares such grammer freak thiss is so stupid whoo carez abouts grammer

Look, this is not a place to go correcting ones grammar. This is a site to find good Harry Potter quotes. I think you should shut up and go keep correcting stupid books you read and leave other people alone.

P.S. I bet you scribbled little correcting marks all over your Harry Potter books, freak. :/

  4. “Very well, then,” said Dumbledore … “I see a light in the kitchen. Let us not deprive Molly any longer of the chance to deplore how thin you are.” -Dumbledore, Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince

  5. “But we’re not stupid. We know our names are Gred and Forge.” -Gred or Forge…

    Harry-”I’ve got presents!”
    Ron-”What did you expect, turnips?”

“Do not pity the dead, Harry. Pity the living. And above all, those who live without love.” -Dumbledore

  6. “you’re the weak one,and your never know love or friendship and i feel sorry for you”
-harry potter in hp and the order of the phoenix

  7. i love all of these :) but i still love

‘if you have to ask, you will never know. if you know, you need only ask.’ – helena ravenclaw

  8. “Wit beyond measure is a man’s greatest treasure.” – Rowena Ravenclaw

“Of course it’s happening inside your head, Harry, but why on earth should that mean it’s not real?” – Albus Dumbledore in HP7

  9. Dumbledore always says words of wisdom!
One of my favorite is: “There is know shame in what you are feeling, Harry.”-Albus Dumbledore in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
Or another great quote of his is: “I trust Severus Snape.”-Albus Dumbledore in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

    The first one I love!

  10. Happiness can be found even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light.

;( <— happy tear (so touching)

  11. We should not be fighting about whom it belongs to. This book has traveled about the world bringing many children and adults to a very magical world, instead of arguing we should all be describing what we like best about it!

  12. “It is possible to exist without your soul, you know, as long as your brain and heart are still working. But you’ll have no sense of self anymore, no memory, no…anything. There’s no chance at all of recorvery. You’ll just exist. As an empty shell.” Hmmm… I wonder if that is what happened to Bella in New Moon. Only, I didn’t see Edward wearing a hooded cloak.

    • absolutely genius, made me laugh. :) Oh, he must have one, how else would he hide his horribly sparkly skin? XD

  13. Okay, I think some people need to calm down.

We, Brits or Americans (or Canadians) all came to this page because we love Harry Potter right? What more to it is there? Harry Potter is a worldwide phenomenon, beloved by millions, something we are lucky to have experienced. It made us cry and laugh and changed so many lives.
No one can claim it except JK Rowling, its creator, because it is so much bigger than any of us or a country.
“Because HARRY POTTER isn’t just a story.
Because SEVEN isn’t just a number
Because ALWAYS isn’t just a word.”
    :)
