Compiling a list of some of the best Bob Marley quotes wouldn’t seem right without some reference and recognition to the Jamaican born singer-songwriter and musician’s outstanding contribution to the world of music. The reggae music legend whose hits included  “I Shot the Sheriff”, “No Woman, No Cry”, “Jamming” and “One Love” died in May 1981 at the age of 36, but now over 30 years later Bob Marley’s songs stand as a proud testimony to the great man’s genius and talent.

The Jamaican ska, rocksteady and reggae star’s band Bob Marley & The Wailers waxed lyrical for 18 years (1963-1981) and their homeland music was deeply influenced by the good and bad sides of life on the Caribbean island and also by Marley’s Rastafarian values. Marley’s music and lyrics were also influenced and ‘fine-tuned’ by his love of ‘herbs’. The band’s posthumous compilation album Legend (1984) sold over 25 million copies making it the best-selling reggae album ever.

Here’s my pick of some of the best Bob Marley quotes.

  1. Mackie Te Whata

This morning I woke up in a curfew !.
Oh good, I was a prisoner too,
Could not reconise the faces standing over me ?,
They were all dressed in uniforms of brutality.

How can you be sitting there, telling me that you care,
When every time I look around, the people suffer and suffering
    everywhere, everywhere
